Hot on the heels of a sell-out production of “Roseliska!” and a Victorian music hall at Portchester Castle in July, the Southsea Shakespeare Actors now bring you “The Beggar’s Opera” by John Gay, for the culmination of their 75th anniversary year.

This is NOT an opera as such in the true Italian style, but a comedic play set amongst the dregs of 18th century London society, near to Newgate Prison (think Hogarth).  There is most definitely lots of music, but all the songs are in ballad style, drawing on the popular airs and ditties of the time, and range from the cruel, to the rumbustious, to the most romantic and sentimental.

You can be assured of an evening of intrigue, fear, lascivious scheming and romance as you witness the struggles of heroine Polly, her love rival Lucy, the roguish highwayman Macheath and an ensemble chorus of pickpockets, “ladies of the night”, opportunists, hangmen and thieves.

Keep a close eye on your handbags and wallets theatregoers …… and hope to see you there!

Curtain up is at 7.30 p.m., the show is suitable for anyone aged 11 upwards, and tickets are £14 (£12 concession for under 16’s) and are on sale now at:
